Rotterdam Cultural Histories #15: Orphaned sculptures and public favourites

TENT opens the 15th edition of the Rotterdam Cultural Histories series. ‘Art is elitist’ is a common accusation against art. ‘Citizens are always impeding art’, is a common distrust from the other side. This edition of Rotterdam Cultural Histories tells a very different story. We show how Rotterdammers cherish the sculptures in their city, lobbying and campaign for them or, if necessary, adopting them. Includes stories about ‘Kabouter Buttplug’ (Santa Claus), ‘Jan Gat’ (The Destroyed City), and the friends of De Witte Bollen.
