RCH #17 ARTISTS AS CITY MAKERS: THE CASE OF KAUS AUSTRALIS

Artists have long played a crucial role in Rotterdam’s cultural development as makers and as city makers. Rotterdam Cultural Histories #17 questions how that role can remain possible in the city. Rotterdam’s current landscape of art institutions emerged in the 1990s. In contrast, artists have been shaping the city’s artistic milieu since the late 1970s. Artist initiatives provide workspace, presentation possibilities, local cooperation, international exchange, and inspiring models of self-organisation. Artists join forces, using their creativity not only to develop their work but also to create conditions for advancing art and culture.
